London Irish Centre – Christmas lights

News

Mitch and his wife Jane, together with several members of the AWF team, had the pleasure of visiting the London Irish Centre this month, to turn on their Christmas lights.

We were delighted to be invited to this event, as the London Irish Centre is located just a few doors away from Amy’s house in Camden Square and Amy used to stop by for a chat from time to time with some of the people visiting the Centre.

We enjoyed a wonderfully festive evening, which included Irish music, carol singing, mulled wine and mince pies. The highlight for Mitch, was singing White Christmas around the Christmas Tree with the London Irish Pensioners – it was just like a scene from his favourite film, ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’.

Much of the London Irish Centre’s work is with the elderly, but they also provide support for many young people too. This work includes assistance with finding accommodation for the homeless and information and guidance on a whole range of issues including housing, benefits, accessing health services and debt management. One of their achievements has been to launch their own football team, which has connected over 70 young people. In 2010/11 the Centre also worked with 281 survivors of institutional abuse and they have helped many of these people access much-needed counselling.

The staff and volunteers at the London Irish Centre provide incredible support for some of the most vulnerable members of the capital’s Irish community and we really enjoyed supporting them at their event. You can watch our video of the event below and see an interview of Mitch on Expose here.

“LIONESS : HIDDEN TREASURES” NUMBER 1 on UK Album Chart

Features

Amy Winehouse’s “Lioness: Hidden Treasures”, an album that stands as a testament to Amy’s exceptional talent and has received overwhelming critical acclaim, has today entered the UK album chart at number 1.

Speaking about the number 1 success Amy’s mother Janis had this to say :

“It’s such amazing news that Amy’s album has gone to number 1, and just goes to show what she still means to people. It’s especially good for the foundation and knowing that every sale will go to help a deserving cause makes the news all the more special. I’m so proud of my daughter and so happy that she is still touching people. She’s forever in my heart” Janis Winehouse

The album was compiled by long-time musical partners Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson in close association with Amy’s family, management and record label Island Records, and proves a fitting tribute to the artist, the talent and the woman. “Lioness: Hidden Treasures” is Amy’s second number 1 album in 2011 following “Back To Black” which topped the UK charts for 3 weeks earlier this year.

Amy’s Back To Black dress raises £36,000

News

Amy Winehouse Dress AuctionThe dress worn by Amy Winehouse on the front of her Back To Black album has raised £36,000 at auction for the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

The polka dot chiffon dress was bought by a South American fashion museum, with proceeds going to the foundation set up by Amy’s family in her memory.

Her father Mitch was at the auction in central London to see the dress fetch £43,200 (including auctioneer fees) after the winning bid was made by the Museo de la Moda in Santiago, Chile. He said:

“We are just over the moon and we owe a great debt to the designer, Disaya, who donated the proceeds from the sale. We are very proud to be helping these deserving causes and have been overwhelmed by the support the foundation has received. We are willing to consider a wide range of projects, as there are so many great organisations out there working with young people in need. We are researching and meeting with different groups who offer support in the areas we wish to fund. We are particularly keen to make donations in Camden, a place very close to the family’s hearts as Amy’s home.”

Chestnut Tree House Snowman Spectacular Fundraising Ball

News

Mitch Winehouse will be taking to the stage to sing a couple of songs and entertain guests at the fourth Snowman Spectacular Fundraising Ball in aid of Chestnut Tree House, the children’s hospice for Sussex.

Mitch was introduced to Chestnut Tree House by a close friend who is also a supporter of the hospice. He visited in October, had a tour of the hospice’s facilities and met some of the children and families staying there. A couple of weeks later, Chestnut Tree House received a donation of £10,000 from the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

“I was delighted to visit Chestnut Tree House,” said Mitch, “I was very moved by the care the hospice provides for sick children and their families and very much hope that our donation will really help make a difference. I am looking forward to performing at the Snowman Spectacular Ball – it’s going to be a great evening for a very worthy cause.”

Said Linda Perry, Director of Children’s Services at Chestnut Tree House, “We are so grateful to Mitch for visiting the hospice and to the Amy Winehouse Foundation for this very generous donation which will go towards setting up a neonates service to help very young babies who have been diagnosed with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. It will be fantastic to hear Mitch singing at the Snowman Spectacular Ball and to have the chance to thank him in person for his support of Chestnut Tree House.”

The Snowman Spectacular Ball takes place on Saturday 3 December at the Hilton Brighton Metropole. Tickets for the Ball have now sold out and the 530 guests can look forward to an evening of superb entertainment, a sumptuous three course dinner, dancing and, of course, lots of fundraising activities, including the spectacular ‘money can’t buy’ auction with some amazing lots up for grabs.

Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice

Chestnut Tree House is the only children’s hospice in Sussex and cares for children and young adults from 0-25 years of age with progressive life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses from all over the county.

Completed in 2003, the hospice provides a ‘home from home’ environment with 10 children’s bedrooms plus eight family rooms, a wet and dry play area, computer and music rooms, a multi sensory room and hydrotherapy pool. The house is set in beautiful gardens within an area of outstanding natural beauty.

There are potentially 500 families with life-limited children in Sussex. Chestnut Tree House offers support for the whole family including psychological support, care in bereavement therapy, end of life and respite care and sibling support.

It costs £2.5 million per year to provide our care services. Families are not charged for their care and the hospice receives hardly any government funding at all, so it relies completely on the generosity, help and support of the people of Sussex.

Mitch Winehouse to visit the  LauraLynn Children’s Hospice

News

Between now and the end of the year, the Amy Winehouse Foundation will be donating to LauraLynn House the euro equivalent of £1 for every copy of Amy’s new album that is sold in Ireland. We are hoping that this will raise a great deal of money to help them with their work.

“Having recently visited and supported several children’s hospices in the UK, we greatly admire the incredible work that these organisations carry out”, said Mr Winehouse.

LauraLynn House was officially opened in September this year and is the first children’s hospice in Ireland. We are delighted to be supporting them and we are really looking forward to our visit this week, so we can see firsthand the work that is being done and also hopefully meet some of families that are being helped there”.

CEO Philomena Dunne of the Children’s Sunshine Home said, “like many of the families, we support Mitch Winehouse and his family who sadly know the pain of losing a child. With the help of organisations like ours we can help sick children and their families to enjoy quality time together in a home-from-home like LauraLynn House whilst ensuring they receive the best available medical care. Be it something as simple as a night’s sleep, respite or end of life care – as every family’s needs are different. We are very grateful for the wonderful support the Amy Winehouse Foundation and Universal Music are giving to LauraLynn House this Christmas”.
