AWF Donates £38,000 To Centrepoint

News | Where Your Money Goes

The Foundation were given a warm welcome by staff and young people at the Centrepoint Camberwell Foyer on February 30, where a cheque for £38,000 was presented to fund a Dual Diagnosis Specialist Worker as part of Centrepoint’s Health & Wellbeing Team.

The funding will be used to employ a practitioner who specialises in ‘dual diagnosis’. This is a term commonly used to describe people who have a combination of mental health problems and substance use. Within the Health and Wellbeing Team, Centrepoint already works with many young people who fit the description, but this new funding will enable to extend our specialism to support young people.

The Dual Diagnosis Practitioner will support a caseload of young people who experience mental health problems and who also use substances. As well as providing one-to-one counselling support, the Dual Diagnosis Practitioner will co-ordinate the care of those specific young people, ensuring they are linked into appropriate external diagnosis and treatment services for substance use and mental health.

A big part of this will be to build relationships with statutory services and develop protocols on multi-agency working around dual diagnosis with numerous local authorities. In addition, they will offer training on dual diagnosis for staff across Centrepoint services, as well as ongoing advice and consultancy to staff supporting young people with such complex needs.

The role will be fully integrated into the Health and Wellbeing Team, supporting the existing substance misuse work.

AWF Donates £30,000 To Roundhouse Radio

News | Where Your Money Goes

The Amy Winehouse Foundation was delighted to award a grant of £30,000 towards The Roundhouse’s Radio Roundhouse project recently, the first of what we hope will be many collaborations between ourselves and the iconic London music venue.

Roundhouse Radio is an online radio station broadcast direct from Camden’s historic Roundhouse by a new generation of radio talent, all aged 25 or under.

Each evening, Roundhouse Radio boasts a schedule of eclectic shows. While throughout the day you can hear archived shows and great music.

In 2011 Roundhouse Radio’s hard work and creativity was recognised at the Smart Future Minds Awards, which celebrates ‘ideas and innovation that will shape lives in cities of the future’, following a nomination from BBC 6Music’s Lauren Laverne.

One of the most recent grants to be awarded is a £30,000 donation to the Roundhouse to support their Roundhouse Radio programme over the next 3 years. The family and Foundation have a particular affinity with the Roundhouse, due to Amy’s close connection with the venue and its location in Camden, and the great work they do using music to inspire and engage young people.

The Roundhouse Radio programme provides access to projects and opportunities for young people aged 16-25 from socio-economically and personally disadvantaged backgrounds. The programme provides young people with transferable interpersonal skills, technical skills, industry knowledge and experience, and has a100% success rate in directing young participants into employment or further related training.

Watch Team AWF At The Centre Point Sleep Out!

Staff members of the Amy Winehouse Foundation bonded at Centre Point’s recent Sleep Out, raising £1500 for the charity into the bargain.

The Sleep Out took place in Broadgate’s Exchange Square, along with another London event and one near Centrepoint’s North East service in Durham, and saw more than 850 brave and hardy souls brave the chilly temperature to raise awarness and money for homeless young people.

Together, they brought in almost £300,000.

AWF Salutes Its Fundraisers!

The Amy Winehouse Foundation would like to extend its thanks and congratulations to a selection of individuals who have gone above and beyond in order to raise money for the charity.

Laura Butler, who has in the last few months done more than most in the name of the Foundation, deserves special mention for her efforts.

Laura is one of the country’s foremost Amy tribute artists, and ensures that she takes her AWF collection bucket to all of her gigs.

One of her most recent events, staged at The Brickhouse in Brick Lane, London – a street that is something of a spiritual home for the Winehouse family – raised £2737.50 for the Foundation, taking her personal tally to £3802.63 since May.

One of the Winehouse’s first homes upon arriving in the UK from Belarus was in Bacon Street, located just off Brick Lane. It is here that the family were living at the time of the 1901 census.

Southampton-based Marc Blackburn held a special all-night gig for the Foundation, with performances from Hampshire-based musicians leading to a great evening of music.

In total, the event raised £1250, a sum gratefully received by the Foundation.

Another event that deserves mention and praise took place closer to home, with hairdresser Marina Berker turning her Enfield salon into a fundraising hub for a special ‘Day for Amy’, raising over £1000 in the process.

Again, we say thank you to all who have contributed to a great year for the Foundation, and hope that we can count on their continued support – as well as those who plan to help out in the new year.

Nas To Donate £1 From Every Ticket Sold To His UK Show To The Amy Winehouse Foundation

Multi-platinum recording artist Nas will be donating £1 from every ticket sold to his London 2013 show to the Amy Winehouse Foundation. Nas, who will be performing at London’s O2 arena on 19th March 2013 had a close personal friendship of Amy, which led him to make the decision to support the charity set up in her name.

As well as being close personal friends the pair also worked together, Amy appears on Nas’ current single ‘Cherry Wine’ that features on his sixth #1 album, and Nas featured on Amy’s Lioness: Hidden Treasures album on ‘Like Smoke’ which was released in December last year.

Mitch Winehouse says, “Nas has announced that £1 from every ticket sold for his London concert will be donated to the Amy Winehouse Foundation. Amy and Nas had a special relationship and he will also be at our New York Gala event on 21st March next year. The donation of £1 per ticket will help us continue our support of disadvantaged young people, and we at the Foundation very much appreciate this magnificent gesture”.

The Amy Winehouse Foundation works to prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people. The Foundation also aims to support, inform and inspire vulnerable and disadvantaged young people to help them reach their full potential.

During this first year the Amy Winehouse Foundation has achieved great success in both fundraising and providing support for charitable organisations.

Nas said, “Amy was just one of a kind, we just clicked like that. May she rest in peace…she’s watching us, she’s holding me down and I’m holding her down here. It’s just love forever”.

Zalon Single In Aid Of Amy Winehouse Foundation Released

You Let Me Breathe, by Zalon, will be released today in aid of the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

The song is Zalon’s emotional tribute to Amy, his friend, who also supported and believed in him as artist, signing him to her label Lioness, featuring him on her Back to Black deluxe album and encouraging him to perform his own songs in the middle of her live set.

Amy would have celebrated her birthday this month and Zalon finally decided that he was ready to release the song he wrote the day after her death in July.

“It was my immediate response,” he says, “It poured out of me. I was returning from Spain when I heard about her passing. I went to my producer’s house (JPL) and we wrote and recorded the song the next day. It was my way of dealing with it.

“The lyrics were about how helpless I felt, I could only cry for Amy, but that wouldn’t bring her back. I was crying in the booth while recording and I wasn’t strong enough to release it until now.”

Zalon met Amy when she came to the weekly sets he sang at a London club, just after she released her first album Frank. One night, she stormed on stage to tell him how much she loved his voice, literally during his performance.

“This small girl came on stage and told me I was amazing,” he smiles, “I didn’t know who she was, then the compere introduced her and she sang. After that she would come down and we would just sing to each other in the corner.

“Amy never forgot that we were friends and how we met. She never treated me as a backing vocalist, she made sure I was featured on her album, she gave me 15 minutes during her own show to do my own stuff. When she won her Grammys, she ran straight into my arms and I said, ‘You did it!’. She said, ‘no, we did it.’

“I’m so grateful to her and her family are doing fantastic work with the Foundation, it is only right to donate the proceeds of the single to the charity. It’s an amazing cause in the name of an amazing person, she would be so proud of it.”

You Let Me Breathe is taken from Zalon’s EP, due for release later this year.

The song is accompanied by a collection of behind the scenes footage of Amy and Zalon on tour sharing moments with others, from Jay-Z, Beyoncé & Jack White (White Stripes) to Chaka Khan and Pattie Labelle.

Comprehensive Amy Winehouse At The BBC Album – Pre-Order Now

“I remember the first time hearing her voice… I instantly knew she was destined to be one of the greatest”

“Jools loved Amy straight away – her honesty as a vocalist, songwriter and Londoner…Britain has produced a lot of brilliant female singer-songwriters and vocalists in the last decade or so, many from Beth Gibbons to Adele, rooted in older black American forms, soul and jazz and blues. But there was only ever one Amy Winehouse. She was frank and fresh and haunted. And we miss her.”
Mark Cooper, BBC

“Amy Winehouse At The BBC”, a four-disc collection chronicling the many remarkable performances by arguably the greatest and most genuine talent to emerge in British music in decades, will be released on November 12th. Spread across three dvds, and one CD, this comprehensive collection captures the strong and enduring relationship that Amy enjoyed with the BBC and is further proof of quite what an extraordinarily talented, completely original, and truly engaging performer Amy was. The Estate of Amy Winehouse is donating the record royalties it receives from the sale of this box set to the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

The Special Edition box set includes Amy’s earliest BBC Radio sessions, her first ever TV performances, as well as candid interviews, rarely seen footage, unheard gems, rarities, unique covers and live versions of classic songs from “Frank” and “Back To Black”. The set also includes a beautifully illustrated booklet featuring rare photographs, a deeply touching appreciation from her friend, rap superstar, Nas, extensive sleeve notes by the Sunday Times Culture’s Dan Cairns as well as the thoughts of BBC producer Mark Cooper who worked closely with Amy on many of the highlights of the set.

Disc 1 is a DVD selection of recordings chosen by Later presenter, songwriter and musician Jools Holland, Disc 2 is a 14-song audio selection dating from 2004 to 2009, while Disc 3 features Amy’s memorable Porchester Hall sessions. “Amy Winehouse – The Day She Came to Dingle” (Disc 4), perhaps the centrepiece of the box set, is a short film featuring a fascinating interview with the artist intercut with Amy, at the height of her powers, delivering an electrifying 20 minute live performance recorded in December 2006 in a tiny church. Like Amy’s three previous albums, this new collection will prove, once more, a fitting tribute to her peerless artistry, phenomenal talent, and extraordinary powers as a songwriter, a singer and an interpreter of classics.
