We are so happy to have started our new residency taking place on the second Sunday of each month throughout the Summer at BOHO in Camden.

Amy’s Yard Live is a new monthly night at BOHO where Amy’s Yard artist and friends will take to the stage to share an eclectic mix of sounds and styles, showcasing some of the fantastic talent who have graduated from our music programme, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

So far the events have been a huge success, and each of our artists have impressed audiences with their individual styles and sounds. The atmosphere has been full of love and support as always, and we are so happy to be able to share this with our friends, family and supporters.

Amy’s Yard Vocal Coaching Master Class

Music | News

During week four of the latest Amy’s Yard cohort the group had a vocal coaching master class with singer & Songwriter, Klara Kjellen. Here the young singers, rappers and producers learnt various vocal techniques and breathing exercises which they can now put into practice every time they perform!

Amy’s Yard Graduation

Last week saw the first ever Amy’s Yard Graduation take place at The Crowne Plaza London – The City Hotel, proud supporters of the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

Here nine of our graduates were presented AQA certificates by our Patron and President of Island Records, Darcus Beese OBE.
It was a lovely evening of celebration and a chance for Master Class facilitators and supporters alike to join the participants who worked so hard throughout their programme and acknowledge their achievements.
Throughout the programme participants not only develop their artist development but they also develop their transferable skills, preparing them for any number of life opportunities – building their skills and confidence.
We are now interviewing for the next round of Amy’s Yard and are very excited about working with another group of talented young artists and individuals.

Amy’s Yard: A young persons perspective

Amy’s Yard; supporting young people to become self sustaining music artists.

A young persons perspective…

Amy’s Yard aims to develop the skills of talented young people who have a keen interest in music but don’t have many opportunities due to varied disadvantages.

Having taken part in the programme myself I can happily say that it has and continues to be a huge help to young people. It has given me the necessary knowledge to develop as a musician whilst also helping me to grow as a person through an incredibly enjoyable and life changing experience.

When first starting out on the course I was filled with excitement and although this was masked by my nervousness and fear of not fitting in, it soon subsided as the atmosphere amongst the group was extremely relaxed and I was quickly able to be myself and engage with other members of the group who also had their own worries. This certainly helped build my confidence and my ability to get involved in the interesting discussions and activities offered.

Attending the individual studio sessions gave us the chance to create music in a safe comfortable environment and for me it was a great way to develop my songwriting and improve on my vocals with the help of constructive feedback.

The master classes were also extremely beneficial as each one was led by experienced professionals who gave us information on aspects of the music industry giving us a deeper insight and with some sessions focusing on performance, which supported us to improve our work.

A session that I found particularly helpful was vocal coaching with Klara Kjellen. On this day we each chose a song to rehearse in order to look at vocal techniques and improve on our voices with feedback from the whole group. At first I found the idea daunting but with the support of others I continued to take part and felt a great sense of achievement afterwards.

Overall the experience has been wonderful and has enabled each of us to achieve many significant things such as performing for the first time and overcoming social and personal difficulties.

Looking back from the start of the course to now I feel as though I have come extremely far and feel very proud of what I have achieved, as do the other members of the group. This would have not been possible without the foundation and the positive impact that it has had on our lives is clear!

I will definitely continue to use the skills I have learned and I will remain grateful for the day that I was accepted onto the course.

Amy’s Yard Music Programme – Developing Tomorrow’s Musicians

One of the Amy Winehouse Foundations’ main areas of focus is to support and develop music provision for young people, and since the Foundation began we have met countless young people with immense talent who were simply held back by not being able to access studio time due to the costs and lack of provision. The Foundation therefore decided to develop Amy’s very own studio and share it with some of the young people and groups we were working with.

The ‘Amy’s Yard’ Programme is based in a very special space, as it was where Amy worked and recorded herself and contains some very special pieces of equipment. Amy’s friends would also use the space, so it wasn’t unusual for the likes of Tyler, Dionne and Zalon to rehearse and record there too. Needless to say it is a massive privilege for anyone lucky enough to take part in the project.

Amy’s Yard provides talented young people with the opportunity to utilise a professional studio and work with a professional producer/engineer to nurture their talent, while increasing their confidence, skills and self-esteem. Every young person engaged in our studio has been referred by one of our partner organisations including The Roundhouse, New Horizon and Pilion Trust, who all work with vulnerable young people facing a variety of complex needs such as homelessness, mental health issues, unemployment or a history of offending.

At any one time there are approximately 8 young people using the space, for 2 hours each week over an 8-15 week period, while they work towards creating their own music and developing their talent, confidence and ability.

Some of the young people taking part in the programme performed at this year’s Amy Winehouse Foundation Gala Ball at the Dorchester, where they wowed the crowd. Followed swiftly by performances at The Hampstead Christmas Festival where the Foundation hosted a stage showcasing talent from ‘Amy’s Yard’ where they once again did a great job entertaining the masses.

You can catch a news story about the project and Dorchester event here:

There are lots of exciting plans for the project in the New Year, which will include the release of a compilation EP and some showcase events.

*The Amy’s Yard Programme is run in association with Metropolis Music Management and Sensible Studios.
